[Alan Luo, Lightweight Alloy Innovator, College of Engineering]: Human civilization is defined by materials from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age and Iron Age. A lot of materials like steel, aluminum, they have been here hundreds of years. Why do we still need to work on new materials? Materials that we use today, it's only a small, tiny fraction of what could be. The material space is really big. There are millions and millions of combinations. We use computational tools to re-engineer the atomic structure and the molecular structure of materials, so we make the material stronger, lighter, and last longer. Engineers are trying to change the world. We always look for out-of-box solutions. We always try different ideas, and no idea is too crazy at the university because we're supposed to be crazy.
