[Intro Graphic]: At Ohio State, Shan-Lu Liu decodes how viruses hijack cells to engineer new lifesaving strategies for pandemic preparedness. [Shan-Lu Liu, Viral Infectious Disease Researcher, College of Veterinary Medicine]: All the major discovery actually start from basic discovery and basic science. We need to prepare for any new emerging virus or bacteria, et cetera, because it's unpredictable. Virus are so simple and their purpose of infection is to make more of themself. And during the process, they can cause damage to the host cell like us. But virus can also be modified for human gene therapy for good use. I was trained as a medical doctor, but I thought research is so cool. I dedicated my whole life in research rather than practicing. My job is not only to do research, but train people, you know, to make them better than me. Okay, so their success is my success. [Closing Graphic]: The Ohio State University EXPERIENCE EXTRAORDINARY
